What do the symbols in front of the nicknames mean:
~ = Founder of the Channel
& = SOP (Level 8)
@ = AOP (Level 6)
% = HOP (Level 4)

Operators and Other Channel Denizens
Channel Regular (A user with a registered nickname.)
Voice (+v) and Auto Voice (+v)
There’s not much you can do with Voice or Auto Voice in #GaySA. It is a mode used in extremely busy channels to limit the number of people who can post comments in the open channel. On #GaySA it signifies, more often than not, that you are somebody’s mate. Others like to think of it as a stepping stone to acquiring Channel Operator status. But of itself it is not a status with any authority. Any HOP, AOP SOP can allocate Voice (+v)
Criteria for Voice (+v): A registered nick. Nick Kill to be set to ON and valid email address linked to the nick.
Auto Voice (+v) can only be allocated by a SOP once the criteria below have been fulfilled. Auto Voice (+v) are automatically voiced when they join the channel by ChanServ.

Channel Operators (+o)
Channel operators can op, kick, ban, and/or un-ban users in accordance with the rules of the channel. They can also change the channel’s topic and modes. There are 3 levels of Channel Operator, namely
Half-Ops
#GaySA has a multitude of HOPs. Typically, HOPs status is granted in #GaySA to reliable and responsible Channel Regulars. The candidate must read and agree to abide by all the rules of the channel. Never ask to be added to the HOPs list. Wait to be nominated and vouched for by another Channel op. HOPs are manually opped when they join the channel by other channel ops.
Criteria: Have had Auto Voice (+V) for no less than 3 months, Nick Kill to be set to ON and valid email address linked to nick.
Auto-Ops
#GaySA has 25 AOPs, usually nominated and vouched for by an AOP and a SOP when a position becomes available. If agreed to by a majority of SOPs, the new AOP will be added to the list by a SOP. AOPs are automatically opped when they join the channel by ChanServ.
Criteria: Have had HOPs (+o) for no less than 12 months, Nick Kill to be set to ON and valid email address linked to the nick.
Super-Ops
#GaySA has 4 SOPs, nominated and elected to the position by other channel SOPs and AOPs. SOPs are opped when they join the channel by ChanServ. Among other things, SOPs have the access authority to add or remove Channel Operators from the list.
The Founder
The channel’s highest authority is either:
- An individual who started the channel, or
- An individual upon whom the outgoing Founder bestowed the authority, or
- The individual elected to the position through a vote by the Channel Regulars.
In all cases, the Founder must be ratified by Atrum and abide by Atrum’s rules.
When a Founder moves on without bestowing his authority to a successor, or when the majority of the channel regulars do not agree with the actions of a Founder, the Channel Regulars can opt to vote for an individual of their choice. To prevent petty voting and re-voting, this option may occur only once every 6 months.
